Arvada

Frustrated with the lack of choice when it comes to where to live? For many, it's either city (possibly crowded, noisy and a hard place to raise a family) or suburb (most likely cookie-cutter homes and a long commute). In the Denver area however, we're lucky to have many 'small-town' cities, offering homes that are neither downtown nor in the middle of nowhere, with plenty of open spaces. Arvada is one such small-city in the metro area. With wide, quiet neighborhood streets, abundant trails and open space, an eclectic mix of housing options and a trendy yet quaint downtown, Arvada hints to old farming days while offering the best of modern living.

Selection and Space

Homes here come in every size, shape, color and budget. Many houses boast turn-of-the-century architectural details and welcoming front porches. Some mimic mountain cabins or farm homes with inviting wrap-around decks, exposed wood construction and deep, earthy hues. Also thrown into the mix are newer, larger homes; their neutral, stucco exteriors, enviable garages and clean lines displaying modern architecture quite well. What's nice about Arvada is that, while you're in the suburbs, you're house doesn't look like your neighbors-and quite possibly doesn't look like any other house in the vicinity.

More impressive than Arvada's home selection however is its' land: Streets wind gently through city-protected open space and meander over rolling hills. Mature trees arch softly over roads and homes, creating a private, mountain feel for residents. Impressively large backyards allow for plenty of outdoor play and gardening (and you won't be able to see directly into your neighbors' home either). Hilltop homes abound, giving amazing, 360º views of the Rocky Mountains and Colorado plains (and easy access to Arvada's 3,000 acres of parks and trails).

Given it's homey, farm-land feel, it's only appropriate Arvada have a historic downtown, complete with old fashioned light posts, cobblestone paved roads and a passing train. Although Arvada has preserved this downtown history quite well, chic boutiques and trendy restaurants are finding their way to the area - changing downtown from sleepy-history to happening and funky yet chic. As a neighborhood favorite, D Note combines live music and specialty pizza, and even dedicates one night a week to the kids (really, bring your toddler, put 'em on the stage to play with plenty of age-appropriate instruments, and get your drink on at a nearby table). La Dolce Vita dishes up fresh baked pastries and gourmet sandwiches, and DiCicco's serves delicious, home-style Italian fare.

A small-town, know-your-neighbors sort of place in an otherwise big city, Arvada will instantly feel like home.
