Denver's Highland neighborhood, marked by 38th Ave., Zuni St., 32nd Ave. and Federal Blvd, has undergone drastic changes in the past few years.
What used to be a swanky, dingy, none-too-special area is now considered by some the place to live in the city. Although Highlands is just minutes from Downtown, Sloan Lake and I-70, the neighborhood has a distinct small-town atmosphere.
This sought-after community is comprised of mostly older Victorian and Queen Anne- architecture homes. A fascinating mix of housing shapes, styles and architectural details line the large and quiet residential streets, blending nicely with big trees and green lawns. Building interiors are characterized by exposed brick walls, winding staircases and other whimsical attributes of the Victorian era. Six public parks, complete with basketball courts, baseball diamonds and well-appointed playgrounds, contribute to the small-neighborhood ambience.
Because of Highland's close proximity to Downtown, and its wonderful real estate choices, the area is undergoing quite a housing revival. New homes and completely renovated original structures are common, along with modern loft-style spaces.
Let's go Shopping
As demand has grown for residential property in Highlands, the commercial shopping district has also grown. More an outdoor window-shopping type space than a traditional shopping area, Highlands offers a wonderful array of chic-specialty boutiques and small (but posh, with a weekend-wait list) restaurants. This casual-with-an-urban-flair area confronts you with fabulous smells of curry, perfume and coffee as you stroll shaded sidewalks and perhaps stop for a drink at an outdoor bistro. Color abounds in gorgeous flower-pots, bright awnings and distinctive store-fronts.
You can find practically anything you need in Highlands, without dealing with oh-so-not-charming mega-stores. Dragon Fly Boutique has to-die-for clothes that won't break the bank. Perfect Petal is a lavish sanctuary for the gardener in us all. Mondo Vino Wine Store will impress with their staffs' incredible knowledge of wine selection (and looks nothing like your typical liquor store). And, 5 star restaurants Duo, Bang!, Coral Room and Swim Club keep your mouth watering for more.
